What a term it has been! We have been very busy in the Grade One area. Firstly, the Grade 1 teachers would like to congratulate all of the students for their hard work so far. We have become very organised after developing our morning routine together, practising lining up and setting up our book work beautifully. To celebrate our Habits of Mind, the Grade 1 students have been lucky to take part in Friday Funday games. This has been a great opportunity for everyone to learn new games, practise social skills and end the week on a positive note. The students enjoyed participating in ‘Healthy Me Day’ which further explored ways to look after their health through exercise, mindfulness and yoga.
Reading
This term students have participated in daily reading lessons which have included Guided Reading sessions with their teacher, listening to reading, word work, strategy focus and writing about reading. We have focused on strategies from ‘Thinking within the Text’ including monitoring and self- correcting, solving words and summarising. Students have been extending their comprehension skills in order to identify and retell the beginning, middle and end of a story.
Writing
This term students have engaged in daily writing lessons. We have focused on writing recounts about familiar events. Students have written recounts that have included three main elements; what happened, who was there and how they felt. They have engaged in Big Write lessons and have written recounts about Specialist day and the Habits of Mind outdoor games. Students have also engaged in weekly spelling lessons using the Soundwaves Program. They have also participated in handwriting lessons focusing on the correct pencil grip and letter formation.
Mathematics
This term we focused on reading, writing and ordering numbers to 120. We have also focused on skip counting patterns. Students have extended their knowledge of skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s using number charts. They have also ordered numbers in the correct sequence, identified numbers before and after and placed numbers on a number line. Students have enjoyed participating in a range of number games including ordering numbers with cards, recognising numbers on a dice without counting and adding numbers.
Habits of Mind Co-operative Games
This term the Grade 1 students have engaged in outdoor games to reinforce the Habits of Mind. We have focused on Listen, Stop and Think, Persist, Make it Right and Try New Ideas. The students have used these Habits of Mind in their learning and during our weekly outdoor games.

On Friday afternoons the students have taken part in a rotation of games which have promoted listening skills, the ability to stop and think and persist.

What can you do?
We would like to acknowledge families who have been consistently reading with their children and practising their Magic words. Please continue this and make learning at home part of an every day routine. This can be simple through games, conversations and questioning.
We thank you for your continued support and a wonderful start to the school year!
