]]]> What’s Happening in Visual Arts in Term 2 2026

In Term 2, Foundation students will continue to explore organisational processes in Art and how to work safely with various equipment and materials. They will draw connections between art and the natural world throughout the term, using found materials in nature to create crayon rubbing artworks that reveal nature’s intricate details and line work. The students will also learn about the important role sharks play in keeping our oceans healthy, blending watercolour paint to create an ocean background before adding a collage shark on top. Lastly, the students will continue to develop their fine motor skills by threading beads and recycled materials onto wire and practising the concepts of symmetry and balance to create their own balancing sculptures.

In Term 2, Grade 1 students will continue to learn how to safely engage in a range of activities, using a variety of tools in the art room. Throughout the term, the students will explore the impact of plastic on our world’s animals, both on land and in our oceans. Using commonly disposed plastic waste such as bottle caps and pen lids, they will create underwater creature artworks with an ocean background made from painted paper collage. Then, the students will experiment with sculptural forms, creating a clay pinch pot that will be fired before a glaze topcoat is applied. They will also be introduced to the fun and engaging process of wet felting to create a wet-felted pet rock, using agitation and layering to interlock the wool fibres.

In Term 2, Grade 2 students will explore the important role that bees play in our world. They will create hand-built clay beehives, utilising the skills of coiling and joining using the ‘score and slip’ method. Once the clay beehives have been fired, they will use underglaze to add colour to their pieces before applying a gloss top glaze. The students will also create a mixed media bee artwork, including the processes of collage, printmaking and drawing. During the term, they will also develop their skills in mixing their own colours to create a colour wheel, using primary colours to create secondary and tertiary colours.

In Term 2, Grade 3 students will learn basic sewing techniques to create a textile artwork on a piece of hessian. They will combine painting with a basic running stitch and overstitch to add interest to their pieces. The students will also complete an artwork that showcases the process of paper collage, layering pieces of tissue and patterned paper on top of one another to create a bright and colourful background. They will then use scientific drawings of bugs and beetles to trace onto a piece of acetate, forming a detailed overlay for their finished pieces. Lastly, the students will develop their skills in mixing their own colours to create a colour wheel, focusing on analogous colours.

In Term 2, Grade 4 students will complete a lengthy unit on clay inspired by the mushroom artworks of Yayoi Kusama. They will explore many techniques, such as rolling, to create a cylindrical structure from a slab-rolled piece of clay. The students will revisit how to create a pinch pot to form the top of their mushroom and will understand the importance of using the score, slip and smooth method to securely connect the two clay pieces together. The students will paint their clay mushrooms with glow paints to use in this year’s glow gallery for the Art Show. Finally, they will study Aboriginal aerial map artworks and use bird’s-eye photos of Melbourne and surrounding areas to create their own aerial map artworks, utilising colour, pattern and symbols to express their ideas about local places.

In Term 2, Grade 5 students will create artworks in recognition of Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, working in small groups to collectively create thought-provoking pieces that explore this year’s theme, “All In”. The students will create a clay sculpture, using slab rolling, shaping and etching processes to form a textured fish. They will hole-punch their pieces to allow string embellished with recycled plastics to be attached once they have been glazed and fired, demonstrating their understanding of the impact of plastic on our ocean’s fish. The students will then participate in a unit of work that explores a connection to nature by creating brushes from foraged materials, which they will use during the mark-making process. They will then use oil pastels to draw magpies on top of their ink backgrounds.

In Term 2, Grade 6 students will use their knowledge of the environmental impacts of bushfires from their Term 1 novel study of the text 47 Degrees to create a powerful dichotomous artwork. They will develop their skills in using materials including graphite pencil, chalk pastel and charcoal to create two separate artworks showcasing the before and after effects of bushfires. The artworks will then be cut into strips and reconstructed to form a concertina structure, changing in appearance depending on the direction from which they are viewed. Finally, the students will use their skills with a range of materials such as watercolour, fineliner and sewing techniques to embellish their painted artworks.

In Term 1, Grade 1 students will revisit organisational processes in Art and how to safely engage in a range of activities, using a variety of tools in the art room. They will develop their knowledge on warm and cool colours and how they can be used to represent or evoke emotions. The students will be using these tones to create a self-portrait, inspired by ‘Senecio’, an artwork by Cubist artist Paul Klee. They will also explore geometric and organic lines, and how to create contrast by using both types of linework. Finally, the students will participate in a collaborative whole-school artwork in celebration of Harmony Day.

In Term 1, Grade 2 students will revisit organisational processes in Art and how to safely engage in a range of activities, using a variety of tools in the art room. They will complete a multi-week unit on self-portraiture, following steps to create a realistic drawing of their own face. The students will explore the concepts of symmetry and proportion and use grey lead pencil and chalk pastels to create their self-portrait which completes the other half of their school photograph. Students will review their understanding of colour, line and pattern to create a striking border for their self-portrait. Finally, the students will participate in a collaborative whole-school artwork in celebration of Harmony Day.

In Term 1, Grade 3 students will revisit organisational processes in Art and how to safely engage in a range of activities, using a variety of tools in the art room. They will explore the work of Romero Britto, a Brazilian artist whose work shows elements of pop art, cubism and graffiti. Using his many portraits as inspiration, the students will create a self-portrait that showcases a similar use of colour, line, shape and pattern, reflecting their own personality. Using the technique of collage, they will create an eye-catching background and use skills such as tracing, cutting and printing to create their multi-layered art piece. Finally, the students will participate in a collaborative whole-school artwork in celebration of Harmony Day.

In Term 1, the Grade 4 students will be inspired by Gustav Klimt’s painted portraits to create their own self-portrait artworks. They will explicitly learn how to use guidelines in order to draw facial features with correct proportion, as well as how to use chalk pastel to achieve a full-coloured artwork that shows variation in tone. The students will then explore geometric and organic line and shape to overlay areas of their artwork with their choice of coloured pattern. Referencing Klimt’s use of opulent colour in his ‘Golden Period’ works, they will finish off their artwork with touches of metallic paint. Finally, the students will participate in a collaborative whole-school artwork in celebration of Harmony Day.

In Term 1, the Grade 5 students will firstly focus on their use of line to create an abstract self-portrait, which will continue over multiple sessions. The students will experiment with the techniques required to create a single-line drawing, including an adjusted pencil grip to allow for a free-flowing line whilst they observe their facial features in a hand-held mirror. Once they have created three single-line drawings of different angles of their face, the students will use their favourite one to trace using craft wire. The students will learn how to use pliers to bend and shape the wire to mimic the organic lines found in contour line drawings. Finally, the students will participate in a collaborative whole-school artwork in celebration of Harmony Day.

In Term 1, the Grade 6 students will firstly focus on their use of line, shape and colour to create a self-portrait inspired by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, which will continue over multiple sessions. They will create their drawing by referencing a photograph of themselves looking into a mirror, showing both their side profile as well as their full face in the reflection. By frequently referring back to the image to assist with proportion, the students will use grey lead pencil to create a realistic drawing, before going over their linework with fine liner and adding colour using watercolour paint. This small-scale drawing will then be encompassed by a handmade frame showcasing bold colours and shapes, reminiscent of Mexican art. Finally, the students will participate in a collaborative whole-school artwork in celebration of Harmony Day.

]]]> What’s Happening in Visual Arts in Term 4 2025

In Visual Arts lessons throughout Term 4, Foundation students will be introduced to earthenware clay after first practicing with playdough. They will explore how to use their hands to manipulate the playdough into a variety of shapes, particularly focusing on forming coils, before transferring this skill to shape and mould the earthenware clay. Once their piece has dried and been fired, they will learn how to add colour to their clay piece by applying a coloured gloss glaze. In addition to their extensive clay unit, the students will make paper doily butterflies using watercolour paint to explore the concept of symmetry.

In Visual Arts lessons throughout Term 4, Grade 1 students will participate in two multi-week units. Firstly, they will study many of Joan Miro’s famous paintings to find and record his abstract symbols into their art folios. The students will then use their gathered symbols to compose their own mixed media artwork, including drawing, wax resist rubbing and painting. Secondly, they will move into a textiles unit where they will construct a piece of art using the technique of wet felting. The students will tear wool into pieces and layer it to create their design before following a series of steps to combine the wool fibers with warm, soapy water and friction, resulting in a finished felted art piece.

In Visual Arts lessons throughout Term 4, Grade 2 students will participate in two multi-week units. Firstly, they will study the abstract artworks of well-known painter, Wassily Kandinsky. The students will use his artistic style as inspiration to create their abstract artwork by cutting their own stamps out of reused materials to add coloured shapes to their artwork before overlaying bold lines in black marker. They will then move into a unit of work to revisit the concept of symmetry explored earlier in the year whilst completing their self-portraits. The students will use reference photos to study the wings of insects, identifying natural shapes and lines within the symmetrically patterned wings. They will draw the wings of an insect of their choice onto a piece of acetate before adding colour, allowing light to shine through.

In Visual Arts lessons throughout Term 4, Grade 3 students will participate in two multi-week units, beginning with a study on the work of Australian indigenous artist, Bronwyn Bancroft. Her use of colour, line and pattern will be used as inspiration for the students to create their own natural landscape. They will also explore the importance of composition whilst constructing their landscapes, learning about foreground, middle ground and background. The students will then move into a lengthy unit where they will construct a monster from a range of reused materials, including tissue boxes, newspaper, carboard rolls, etc. Once they have used their creative thinking to design and construct their monster, they will add mixed media details including paint, coloured paper, pipe cleaners, etc.

In Visual Arts lessons throughout Term 4, Grade 4 students will participate in an extensive textiles and printing unit. They will study the work of American pop artist, Keith Haring, exploring his use of bold colour, simple shapes and various lines to evoke movement within his pieces. The students will draw and cut out their own stamps from cardboard before applying bold coloured paint to stamp the shapes onto a piece of fabric in a layered manner. They will then stitch various lines onto the stamped fabric, beginning with a basic running stitch before learning how to apply a backstitch.

In Visual Arts lessons throughout Term 4, Grade 5 students will participate in two units of work, beginning with a painting unit based off the vibrant and eye-catching works of artist, Moira Hazel. They will construct their own Australiana themed paintings which showcase a range of bold colours and fun patterns, creating a sense of depth due to the layered application of colour. This unit will give the students an opportunity to further develop their painting skills and how to develop a vibrant colour palette. They will then explore the abstract art style called Op Art (Optical Art), using geometric patterns and high-contrast colours to create their own mini artwork that manipulates perception and tricks the eye.

In Visual Arts lessons throughout Term 4, Grade 6 students will participate in an extensive clay unit to create a piece to celebrate their final year of primary school. They will draw inspiration from the fun and quirky style of Brisbane based ceramic artist, Bonnie Hislop, to design their own celebratory clay trophy. The students will revisit the skills practiced in Term 1’s clay unit to shape and mould a pinch pot, before adding the decorative handles and base to form the trophy cup. As practiced in Term 1, they will use the ‘score and slip’ method to thoroughly attach the clay pieces together, ensuring their piece remains strong throughout the drying and firing process. The students will then glaze their piece in vibrant underglaze colours before finishing with a gloss top coat. Finally, the students will participate in a collaborative commemorative artwork, so that a part of them will always remain at Âé¶ččû¶ł Primary School as they move off to secondary school.

Moving onto a unit focusing on the technique of paper collage, they will create an eye-catching piece consisting of layered paper mushrooms with coloured acrylic dots, based on Yayoi Kusama’s many mushroom artworks. They will use skills such as tracing, cutting and stamping to create their multi-layered artwork.

In Term 1, the Grade 4 students will be inspired by the self-portraits of Frida Kahlo to create their own self-portraits with a range of flora and fauna featured in the pieces. They will explicitly learn how to effectively use watercolour paints to achieve a full-coloured artwork that shows variation in tone. The students will be completing a lengthy unit on clay, inspired by the mushroom artworks by Yayoi Kusama. They will explore many techniques such as rolling to create a cylindrical structure from a slab-rolled piece of clay. The students will revisit how to create a pinch pot to form the top of their mushroom and will understand the importance of using the score, slip and smooth method to securely connect the two clay pieces together. The children will paint their clay with underglaze before firing their creations in the kiln. A second glaze and fire will occur to complete the finished product.

In Term 1, the Grade 5 students will firstly focus on their use of line, shape and colour to create an abstract self-portrait, which will continue over multiple sessions. The students will experiment with the techniques required to create a single-line drawing, including an adjusted pencil grip to allow for a free-flowing line whilst they observe their facial features in a hand-held mirror. Once they have created their three single-line drawings of different angles of their face, the students will use coloured ink and pipets to create a whimsical background. Once dry, they will find enclosed shapes within their self-portraits to colour in a more solid colour to create contrast. The linework will then be strengthened with the use of black marker. The students will then move onto their Yayoi Kusama (a Japanese contemporary artist) unit, creating striking artworks that include a culmination of inspired symbols seen in Yayoi’s artworks. They will create a multi-coloured and patterned background, which once dry, will be covered in an opaque layer of acrylic paint. The students will then use a range of tools to scratch their chosen symbols into the layer of paint to reveal the colours behind.

In Term 1, the Grade 6 students will firstly focus on their use of line, shape and colour to create an abstract self-portrait loosely inspired by artist Paul Klee, which will continue over multiple sessions. The students will experiment with the techniques required to create a single-line drawing, including an adjusted pencil grip to allow for a free-flowing line whilst they observe their facial features in a hand-held mirror. Once they have created their three single-line drawings, they will choose their favourite elements within each drawing to create one final abstract face. This will be layered on top of a background that the students have produced using acrylic paint, cut into strips and arranged in a way that plays with line, directionality and tone. The students will then move into their clay unit, where they will create pieces inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s giant pumpkin sculptures. They’ll learn techniques on how to roll their clay into a smooth sphere and acquire skills on how to make a pinch pot. The students will use wooden tools to add lines and texture to the outer layer. The children will paint their clay with underglaze before firing their creations in the kiln. A second glaze and fire will occur to complete the finish product.
