As they donned caps and gowns last weekend, a group of determined mothers at 鶹 at Trumbull celebrated more than graduation. These students graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and celebrated their academic achievements and Mother’s Day with gratitude.
Balancing the rigorous demands of nursing school with the responsibilities of parenthood, these women navigated clinical rotations, late-night study sessions and child care, all while pursuing their dreams.
“We want to thank 鶹 at Trumbull for embracing nontraditional students like us,” Sarah McCulley, 2025 BSN graduate and former Student Nurses' Association president said. “From professors who understood the unpredictability of parenting to advisors who helped us manage our schedules, the support made all the difference.”
They credit the university’s flexibility and inclusive environment as key factors in their success. Many of them questioned whether it was possible to return to school while raising children, but found encouragement and understanding at every turn.
Now, they’re entering the nursing workforce with Mercy Health, prepared to care for their community with compassion, resilience—and a mother’s touch.
“This degree isn’t just a piece of paper,” McCulley said. “It represents years of hard work, sacrifice and the example we’re setting for our kids.”
Congratulations to our BSN graduate moms:
- Elizabeth Robinson, 31, of Warren, mother to Connor (8), Carrigan (5), and Cillian (3)
- Sarah McCulley, 32, of Fowler, mother to Carter (11) and Gracelynn (10)
- BreeAnna Morse, 23, of Cortland, mother to Addison (2)
- Alexis Simak, 23, of Huntsburg, mother to Teigan (5)
For Kent State Trumbull, their success represents more than a graduation statistic. It’s a reflection of the university’s mission to empower students of all backgrounds.
“These women are incredible examples of perseverance,” Kathy Dwinnels, Ph.D, professor and Kent State Trumbull BSN coordinator, said. “We’re proud to be part of their journey.”
As these graduates advance into their nursing careers, they also move forward as mothers, role models and trailblazers. Congratulations to all of our 2025 graduates.
